Hello!
My name is Lindi McMahon. I'm a Launceston resident, business owner (Hope&Me in the Quadrant Mall), mum to two adults, and have proudly been engaged with the Launceston community for as long as I can remember.
I was elected to Launceston City Council to serve the people of Launceston with passion and with purpose. I am no stranger to business, governance and finance, and I thrive in community engagement, energy, and with people.
I love Launceston.
Launceston is a very special and beautiful little place in the world. I love it for its sunny days, crisp foggy mornings, multi-coloured rooftops creating patchwork on either side of the Tamar Valley, and mostly for its diversity of wonderful people. Long before it was Launceston, it was the cool, sunny, waterfront land named kanamaluka, and I acknowledge its history and people as well.
As a committed community leader and participant, I am proudly standing for Councillor, because I want to see all people of Launceston enjoy a city that can boast social and economic excellence. I fully believe and humbly recognise that the only way to achieve excellence is to truly understand the challenges and barriers that are faced by all of our people.
I have owned and successfully run my business Hope&Me in the Quadrant Mall for 13 years. I am now lucky to work alongside my daughter Chelsea, and we both delight in the many people of Launceston we encounter each day; long-term customers (now friends!), new customers, neighbouring businesses, and of course the many visitors to Launceston, with whom we proudly share our recommendations for our gorgeous city and state.
I love to be involved. Sometimes the focus is on enlivening the city in a fun, exciting, family-oriented way for the good of the community, hospitality and retail (Mini Makers Market, Mad Hatters Twilight Festival, Get Vocal Buy Local, Cityprom, City of Launceston Lions Club) and other times my focus is on the tougher stuff: Lifting the Lid on Mental Health, Tassie Freezing for MND, CEO Sleepout, Promise for Afghanistan, Camp Quality, Multiple Sclerosis 50K.
I’m not scared to jump in and have a go, I don’t turn away from difficult issues, and I’m unashamed about challenging and disrupting the status quo. For me, it’s about people. People are at the centre of the wonderful and the challenging experiences of life.
In the midst of big global challenges, Launceston is seeing its own versions of these challenges. Homelessness and a debilitating affordable housing crisis are more obvious and pervasive than ever. Mental illness is affecting more Tasmanians (of all ages) than ever before. A low level of civic and social opportunities for some young people is having knock-on effects, and these issues all require our attention and our action. When I see a problem, I want to do something; not just throw money around or talk about it, but do something.
The words I live by:
Passion. Purpose. People.
We need to continue to nurture and support the people, places, and experiences that make us unique.
Everyone benefits when we all do whatever we can to lift up the people around us.
